Pain is a warning signal that there is something wrong going on in our body. It can cause us to move our hand away from something that is too hot or too cold or otherwise needs attention.
It tells us that the arm or leg we just twisted has been injured. It indicates that we might be under a bit too much stress when we get a headache. And as a pressing pain in our chest we get ourselves to an Emergency Room as soon as possible to take care of a possible heart attack. As a warning signal it is our friend.
When pain goes beyond warning us of eminent danger and becomes chronic...it becomes our foe. This is especially true for the millions of sufferers of Chronic Pain. This is because when doctors can't explain why a person is experiencing chronic pain, many physicians and the lay public, incorrectly believe that the patient must be suffering from a psychological disorder and that their "pain is all in their heads". When pain is viewed as "psychosomatic" the sufferers get very little support from their doctors, families or employers.
It is known that stress, distress, anticipation, deeply held beliefs and expectations can all impact the experience of a person's pain. Many people have been told that they have to "just deal with it" or "buck up". They numb themselves with medications or alcohol just to get to sleep only to wake up when the effects of the numbing agent wears off.
